Communication is basic to the world we know. It is important that correct communication occurs because poor communication can result in negative consequences such as losing a job. However, communication is effective only when the messages are mutually understood by the sender and receiver. Communication operates in many dimensions, the most commonly being intrapersonal, interpersonal, and person to group. Intrapersonal communication takes place within the person. Interpersonal communication takes place person to person. Person-to-group communication implies a structured situation in which one person addresses a group on a predetermined subject. Official communication is usually written and can appear to be person to person or person to group. It is an important part of communication in action. The process of communication requires an ongoing effort to sharpen communication skills. Effective communication skills are acquired in many different ways. Effective communication is essential to positive police-community relations. The specific process of communication begins with a source that has an idea that is transmitted to a receiver who must decode the message. Feedback is essential. The receiver's response is based on the receiver's perception of the message. However, one must be careful in the communication process because distortion can emanate from both the receiver and the communicator. Lastly, one should note that communication has no beginning or end, it is a continuing process.
