Invisible punishments are those punishments not really known or understood by the public (or even the offender prior to them being applied) but that have serious negative consequences for the individual who has committed the crime. Those consequences (known as collateral consequences) might include loss of the right to vote, being prevented from receiving welfare or food stamp benefits, not being allowed to live in public housing, or being unable to have certain occupations.
