how did you subtract the -x^2 and the -ax^2 to a result of x^2(a - 1)?

-x^2 - (-ax^2)
-x^2 + ax^2

factor out an x^2

x^2(-1 + a)

rearrange:

x^2(a - 1)

Same this, 2x - ( - x(a - 1) )

2x + x(a - 1)

2x + xa - x

factor out the x

x(2 + a - 1)

x(1 + a)
