TPI Mediated GAP to DHAP Conversion
Glyceraldehyde 3-phosphate (GAP) can be converted to Dihydroxyacetone phosphate (DHAP). The rate of this conversion can be increased significantly by the enzyme Triosephosphate isomerase (TPI). Data has been obtained from experiments in which various concentrations of GAP with TPI were incubated for exactly 10 minutes in a suited buffer. The enzyme concentration in each vial wa 50 units per mL. After incubating the concentration of DHAP was determined. GAP and DHAP concentrations are given in the following table:

GAP (mM)   DHAP (μM)
0.5         27.27
1.0         50.00
2.0         85.71
5.0         150.00

How is a substrate to product conversion rate accelerated by an enzyme under optimal conditions

Enzymes lower the activation energy required for a reaction to take place.

The rate increase can be explained using the Michaelis-Menten equation.
