The energized electrons are quickly absorbed by an electron acceptor called “
plastoquinone” embedded in the
thylakoid membrane
The electrons lost by the chlorophyll A molecule in the reaction center of the Photosystem II are immediately _____ with two electrons released in the _____________________ or splitting of one molecule of water
Excerpt
Not sure what to add here... I know that photosystem II obtains replacement electrons from water molecules, resulting in their split into hydrogen ions (H+) and oxygen atoms. The oxygen atoms combine to form molecular oxygen (O2), which is released into the atmosphere. The hydrogen ions are released into the lumen.
In addition to the two electrons, photolysis also produces two
hydrogen ions and
oxygen that is released in to the atmosphere
The two electrons from Photosystem II that were absorbed by electron acceptor “Q” are then transferred to
cytochrome and on to several other molecules in a series of
REDOX reactions
This electron transport chain is very similar to that found in mitochondria
The production of ATP is similar to that in
mitochondia in that H+ are pumped into the
thylakoid interior (lumen) and large electrochemical gradient is established.
