Assessment, evaluation, and testing are all used in educational settings to measure how much of the assigned materials students master, how well students learn the materials, and how well students accomplish the specified goals and objectives. Although you may feel that evaluations just give instructors material on which to base a score or grade, they also assist you in assessing your own learning.

Professionals in education distinguish between assessment, evaluation, and testing. For the sake of this tutorial, however, all you really need to grasp is that these are three different phrases for referring to the process of determining how much you know about a specific topic and that each term has a different meaning. To keep things simple, we'll refer to this process of measuring what you know and have learned as "evaluation" throughout this session.

A test or quiz is used to assess a person's knowledge of a subject in order to ascertain what he or she knows or has learnt. Testing determines the amount of skill or knowledge attained.

The process of making decisions based on criteria and evidence is known as evaluation.

The practice of documenting knowledge, abilities, attitudes, and beliefs, usually in measurable terms, is known as assessment. Rather than simply being judged, the purpose of assessment is to improve. Assessment is the process of describing, collecting, recording, storing, and analyzing information regarding learning in an educational context.
