In developing multicultural proficiencies, educators first need to know their own cultural identity and the degree to which they identify with the various cultural groups of which they are members. Secondly, they should be able to accept the fact that they have prejudices that may affect the way they react to students in their classrooms. By acknowledging these prejudices, they can develop strategies to compensate or overcome them.
