A patient who sustained a C4-5 fracture subluxation has been placed in Gardner-Well tong traction with 20 pounds of weight. The patient is alert and oriented and complaining of neck pain and spasms. Which nursing intervention should be implemented?
1. Remove 10 pounds of weight from the traction apparatus.
2. Administer PRN muscle relaxants.
3. Report this unusual finding to the surgeon immediately.
4. Place a pillow under the patient's neck with ice bags to the side.
