Since January 1, 1999, some European countries (not including the United Kingdom) have been part of the eurozone, which means that they use the same currency, the euro. This is referred to as a currency union, a form of fixed exchange rate, in which, by using the same currency, all of the member economies are pegging their exchange rates to one another.
