I think I read maybe a decade ago that they were trying to see if it might be possible to turn other cell types into gamete cells to help people overcome fertility issues. Has any progress been made?

You can't revert a somatic cell into a gamete because a gamete has half the DNA of ordinary cells.

How do you mean?

Gametes are produced via the process of meiosis inside reproductive organs.
