To add, sex-determination isn't solely controlled by the presence or absence of the Y-chromosomes. For example, the sex determination in humans system based on the presence of the SRY gene on the Y chromosome. In mammals, the presence of the SRY gene leads to male development, while its absence results in female development. This is clearly not the case for the African clawed frogs.
