A star is a huge collection of gas that is held together by gravity. This gas is ionised - which means that the electrons in the gas atoms are free to move around on their own and are only loosely attached to their atoms. This type of gas is called a plasma. Because a plasma has free electrons it can conduct electricity and it is affected by magnetic fields.

The energy given out by a star like the Sun is in a variety of forms. Electromagnetic radiation from radio waves to gamma-rays are emitted along with other, energetic particles.

The radiation given out by our nearest star, the Sun, is essential for life on planet Earth. At the bottom of every food chain is either a plant using sunlight for photosynthesis or bacteria, using chemical and geothermal energy - which has been influenced by the Sun.
