The set point theory proposes that biological mechanisms work to keep one’s body weight at a genetically determined set point.
Biological mechanisms produce urges to eat or loss of appetite when body weight deviates from the set point by more than 10 percent.
When a heavy person diets, they are working against their biological set point.
Their body metabolism will slow down to conserve energy and fat reserves.
When a thin person overeats, metabolism speeds up, burning energy.
