how can substitution errors happen during replication? Is it possible for two purine or pyrimidine bases to bond to each other? So how can the enzyme put a T instead of a C, for example, if it won't bind to the G on the other side?

Yes, it can. In fact, a lot of mistakes are made, but then corrected by other enzymes designed to correct mistakes. The incorrect base won't allow for correct annealing to take place.

I forgot which enzyme it is, but one major enzyme is designed to both add and correct simultaneously.
