What do evolutionary psychologists mean when they say that the human mind developed as a collection of specialized and independent modules? How have critics responded to this assumption?

Evolutionary psychologists don’t believe the mind is a general-purpose computer waiting to be programmed.
It is suggested that new brain modules developed to handle specific survival problems such as the need to find food or a mate.
Thus our present brain is a collection of these modules.
Critics think this idea is similar to instinct theory and doesn’t explain anything.
