Evolutionary biologists often start with an observation about some characteristic and then try to account for it in evolutionary terms.  How might they explain the difference in the plumage of male peacocks when compared to the females?

During the history of the species, males who could put on the flashiest display got the attention of females.
Such males therefore had a better chance of reproducing.
Females, on the other hand, did not have to attract the males’ attention so didn’t need colorful plumage.
