How would you tell the difference between gypsum and chert?

Both gypsum and chert are chemical sedimentary rocks. They are different because of how they form. Gypsum is an evaporite mineral that is left over after a body of water dries out, this usually occurs multiple times. Chert is formed from living organisms. Diatoms and radiolarians have silica shells. When they die, the silica forms chert.
