As individuals develop from preconventional to conventional moral judgment, the tendency to judge what is right based on self-interest gives way to a view that what is right is what pleases an important person or group.

Seven-year-old Adam shows preconventional self-interest (Kohlberg Stage 2) in holding the younger child to the letter of the "deal." Heidi's grandfather showed conventional morality when he believed that if it's the Law it must be right (Kohlberg Stage 4). The young teen is basing moral judgment on the group's norm, believing her mother is wrong to adopt an independent standard.
