A certain degree of conformity allows us to function as a society. However, beyond that, some factors seem to influence an individual’s decision to conform. These factors include the desire to win approval of others, to gain friendship and love, and to gain the company of others. Research suggests that personality also plays a role. Specifically, individuals with a low neuroticism but high agreeableness and conscientiousness score on the Big Five seem to be more likely to conform.
