Mastering Biology Homework chapter 16
The DNA double helix is composed of two strands of DNA; each strand is a polymer of DNA nucleotides. Each nucleotide consists of a sugar, a phosphate group, and one of four nitrogenous bases. The structure and orientation of the two strands are important to understanding DNA replication.

Drag the labels to their appropriate locations on the diagram below. Use only the pink labels for the pink targets, and the blue labels for the blue targets. Labels can be used once, more than once, or not at all.

DNA replicates from the 5' to the 3' end, always.The phosphates form what is called "the phosphate backbone", so it is the outermost molecule. Here it is marked as the P. Notice how the P's on the right side are upside down.

This is because that side is replicated in the other direction. The pink pentagons are the sugars, (in DNA it is deoxyribose). The blue things are the nitrogen bases, Guanine, Cytosine, Adenine, and Thyamine. A pairs with T, and G with C. The phosphates attach to the sugars with phosphodiester bonds, and the bases bond with hydrogen bonds.

Each line connecting them represents one hydrogen bond. A phosphate, sugar, and base together form a nucleotide.

In biology, histones are highly alkaline proteins found in eukaryotic cell nuclei that package and order the DNA into structural units called nucleosomes.They are the chief protein components of chromatin, acting as spools around which DNA winds, and play a role in gene regulation. Without histones, the unwound DNA in chromosomes would be very long (a length to width ratio of more than 10 million to 1 in human DNA). For example, each human cell has about 1.8 meters of DNA, but wound on the histones it has about 90 micrometers (0.09 mm) of chromatin, which, when duplicated and condensed during mitosis, result in about 120 micrometers of chromosomes.
