This is a growth experiment on a petri dish. Bacteria is innoculated on agar on one-half of the plate, but not on the other. Will this alter growth? Can the bacteria, say, sense this agar and somehow migrate and grow on the other agar?

they wont necessarily move in front of your eyes in that direction but should grow in that direction over some time...this may take a little while though....they can have certain receptors on their plamsa membrane that detect environmental conditions such as nutrient availability and such, but im not sure if this is specific to E.col

the whole sample would live longer because it provides more nutrients and more space for waste and you woud most likely experience a higher peak population density
