The nervous system is broken down into the central nervous system, which is made up of the brain and spinal cord. The other portion of the nervous system is the peripheral nervous system, which carries messages to and from the central nervous system. The peripheral nervous system can be broken down into the autonomic nervous system, which is responsible for involuntary activities of organs and glands, and the somatic nervous system, which controls the sense organs skeletal muscles and voluntary activities. The autonomic nervous system can then be broken down into the sympathetic nervous system, which prepares the body for an emergency situation, and the parasympathetic nervous system, which brings the body back to normal.
