Tankers leaving the Persian Gulf, where the extra oil production would be most likely to occur, must navigate the northwest Indian Ocean, which averages five tropical storms per year. It is also the site of numerous spectacular coral reef communities. Already the mouth of the Persian Gulf is the site of the world’s highest density of ocean shipping, averaging more than 400 million tons of oil per year by 1996 .  It has also been the site of at least four major tanker accidents. Evaluate the environmental consequences of a large increase in tanker traffic.

It is likely that environmental “accidents” would increase, further threatening sea life.
