The NER system repairs thymine dimers and other serious distortions of the DNA helix. It is a system of four proteins (UvrA, UvrB, UvrC, and UvrD) that work in a complex to recognize a distortion in the DNA, make cuts on either side of the lesion, release the short single-stranded cut segment, and allow DNA polymerase and ligase to fill in the gap with new bases.
