addition to emucom answer,
complete metamorphosis, at different stage, the arthropod is different morphologically and they also have different habitat, different food. different habitat we aslo known as habitat niche.so this reduce the competition between the species. this unable the success of arthropod. for example at larva stage, larva eat leaf while for butterfly they eat nectar from flower.
