The chemoreceptors of the tongue respond to monosaccharides (sugars), metal ions (salty tastes), alkaloids (bitter tastes), and acids (sour tastes). Which type of receptor do you think is most sensitive? Why? (Hint: One of the four types of chemicals is present in many plant poisons.)
