indeterminate sentencing: encourages rehabilitation through the use of general and relatively unspecific sentences (ie term of imprisonment from one to ten years)

pros:
*takes into consideration detailed differences in degrees of guilts
*inmate's behavior while incarcerated is the primary determinant of the amount of time served

cons:
*allows judge's personalities and personal beliefs to produce too wide a range of sentencing practices
*perpetuates a system under which offenders might be sentenced more on the basis of personal and social characteristics rather than on culpability
*produces dishonesty in sentencing
