Madagascar Periwinkle is a common garden plant. In the 1950s it was discovered to have important therapeutic applications  for Hodgkin's disease and leukemia when two alkaloids in its leaves -vinblastine and vincristine- were discovered to be active anti -cancer chemicals. IF YOU WERE A PHARMACEUTICAL CHEMIST WHAT IS THE FIRST STEP YOU WOULD TAKE IN LOOKING FOR GOOD CANDIDATE PLANTS FROM WHICH TO EXTRACT COMPOUNDS THAT MIGHT HAVE SIMILAR OR BETTER THERAPEUTIC USES?

Thank you very much !!

1.  Get funding and approval for the research.  Duh.
2.  Analyze other varieties of Madagascar Periwinkle for similar compounds
3.  Analyze other plants in the same genus as Madagascar Periwinkle for similar compounds
