A serving is the recommended amount you should consume, whereas a portion is the amount you choose to eat at any one time. Most of us select portions that are much bigger than the recommended servings. This is why the MyPlate plan recommends avoiding oversized portions and why it offers relatively easy to remember serving sizes (e.g., a woman's fist is about 1 cup of pasta or vegetables).
