The following is a schematic drawing of an autoradiogram from a DNA fingerprinting analysis in a paternity trial.

2            --M2---         --C2---
3            ---M3--         --C3---

5            --M5---         --C5---
6                                --C6---                  --FF6---
7                                          --F7---
8            ---M7--         --C8---
9                              --C9---
10                                       --F10---

1.   Who is the father?
2.   Explain the presence of band 9 in the child.

I think that Father 2 is the father due to the match ups of the same genes, and no matches on Father 1.
I don't understand the question about the presence of band 9. Any help??

M is mother
C is child
F is father 1
FF is father 2
The numbers with the letters are what line they are on.

Could be a genetic mutation or the sample could have been contaminated during the PCR/profiling process. It is a strange question but with paternity if most of the bands match then you can assume that the closest match is the true father.

A.   Who is the father?
Father 2 is the father. Nothing lines up with the child in Father 1.

B.   Explain the presence of band 9 in the child.
Band 9 is simply a mutation in the child’s genes. It does not match up with either father or mother.

This is what I put for the answer, but I just submitted it today (looking back where I said I submitted it earlier, I THOUGHT I submitted it, but checked today for a grade, and realized that I did not submit  Pouting Face ), so we will see what he says. I am sorry I have gotten behind on my assignments, other school work has taken priority. I am getting back on track now. I will post whenever he gives my grade back.
