It just feels like a normal time when you get blood drawn.  I think they either do it in your finger or the inside of your elbow.

When a doctor tests a person for Anemia, tests usually ordered are: CBC, Iron, Transferrin, Total Iron Binding Capacity (TIBC)
Transferrin transports iron and helps prevent loss of iron through the kidneys. It binding of iron helps prevent iron deposits in the tissues if there is excess. Looking at the blood slide when doing a CBC, Iron deficient person's red cells will be hypochromic-microcytic; generally agreed that the MCV <70, the TIBC will be increased, serum Iron will decrease, reticulocyte count will begin to elevate.
