I know that a catalyst is a chemical that is added that does not affect the reaction at all....so what is the point of there being one? Such as sulfuric acid being a catalyst in the preparation of esters.

a catalyst does not effect the reaction but THE RATE of the reaction - it accelerates or may retard the reaction.

The main reason you add a catalyst is to reduce the time needed for the reaction to take place. Catalysts are also used to lower required intial energy. They speed up the reaction and reduce initial energy needs.

Catalyst increases the rate of chemical reaction.
simply put, if we want to produce certain amount of product such as 100 ton per day. The reactor required will be many many times bigger than the one with catalyst. So, commercially there is an economic advantage for using catalyst.

it is in correct to say that catalyst does not effect the chemical reaction.  the fact is catalyst facilitates the reaction but does not behave as reactant. The catalyst some times participates to form intermediate product but at the end is found to be intact.
