What are the "underlying concepts" of organic chemistry that make everything make sense? I always hear people commenting that there are a handful of principles that can be applied to (and used to solve) all the various types of problems you encounter in organic chemistry, but no one has ever explained what they are. So, what are they? Thanks!

I'm not sure what all of the principles are, but I can tell you one very important one: all organic reactions can essentially be boiled down to acid-base reactions between nucleophile (an electron-rich species or atom) and an electrophile (an electron-poor species or atom). If you can identify you nucleophile and electrophile at each step of the reaction, you'll be good to go.
