1 AU = 149 597 870 kms
It is the distance between the sun and the earth, about 93 million miles

It is usually used to calculate the distance between object within the solar system

It's used to describe distances on a relatively small scale, like within the solar system (including its outermost reaches).

One astronomical unit is the distance from the earth to the sun.  It is helpful for measuring things in our solar system but it is not very useful once you get out into interstellar space.

An astronomical unit is the average distance from the earth to the sun.  We use it to sometimes describe the distance between other planets, distance between binary stars, and to measure distances across supermassive black holes.  These are just some common ones.  But the AU is a very common unit of measure in astronomy.  I hope this helps.
