I'm doing an assignment, and I need to know how do I find out the number of neutrons in element when only the mass number is given. The element is C-13, which is not on the periodic table so I can't look to find out what the atomic number is. If I knew the atomic number, then I wouldn't ask. The teacher didn't explain it nor did he show us an example that wasn't on the periodic table. I need help.

remember mass weight is both the number of protons and neutrons.

so you know the number of protons from the atomic number
All isotopes have the same number of protons no matter what number follows it.
so carbon 13 would be 6 protons and 7 neutrons

carbon 12 is 6 protons and 6 neutrons.
