I would like to know the chemical reasons why items such as paper fade in color as a response to light?  Some details would be nice. Obviously I know it is due to sunlight- I am looking for an answer to explain WHY this happens.  Thanks.

If you look at the general azo dye structure, you see it contains a N=N bond.  This bond can be broken in some cases by UV light to give two separate compounds that are not colored.  Sometimes there are other structures on the molecules that can react.  It is also possible for the N=N bond to become an N-N.  This can also be done with oxidants like ozone.  Look at page 51 of the second reference.
