In chemistry, to break a bond usualy requires energy, how come in the case of ATP breaking the phosphate bond, energy is released.

The phosphate reacts with the oxygen?  Just a guess.

You need to input some energy to start the reaction but a larger amount is released by the bond breaking than is put in. The initial energy is like a kick start.
