it is because pepsin is secreted by them as pepsinogen which is inactive form of pepsin on exposure to HCl it turns to pepsin. stomach walls are protected by pepsin by mucous layers. thus, the cells producing the enzyme and stomach walls both are protected from enzymatic action.
