I'm reading an article for Parasitology and ran into this... here's the context:"GP63, also known as the major surface protease (MSP), has been related to resistance to complement-mediated lysis, among others."

Complement is part of the innate immune system. Antigen binds IgM or IgG, bound immunoglobin binds and activates the first complement protein complex, activated complement ultimately assembles a membrane attack complex on the surface of whatever the antigen is connected to and bores a hole through the membrane. No doubt a protease on the surface could interfere with the membrane attack complex.
