Assign charges to ions and parts that they typically have. Like +1 to alkali metals.

Polyatomic ions are usually paired with an atom that already has a specific charge like Ca, where you know it is +2 if there is only one Ca atom then the charge of the polyatomic ion is alos +2, if there is 2 Ca atoms then the charge is +4 and so on.
