The molecular formula is the exact formula with the number of each atoms altogether. The empirical is the simplest whole number ratio of the molecular formula. For example:
Benzene's molecular formula is C6H6, but it shares a common factor of 6, so its empirical formula is CH. Glucose has a molecular formula of C6H12O6, and has a common factor of 6, so its empirical formula is CH2O.

But-2-ene has a molecular formula of C4H8, so its empirical formula would be CH2, because there's a common factor of 2.
