For example, ethyl ether is C4H10O
How can you find the empirical formula from that?

It's like fractions.  Lowest common denominator.  In this case
C4H10O is the empirical... However if it were C4H10O2 it'd be C2H5O.  Get it? :-)

The empirical formula of a compound is the lowest whole number ratio you can come up with between its atoms.

for example,    if the compound was   C6Hl2O6,    this could be reduced to   CH2O as the empirical formula

but for diethyl ether,   you cannot get a lower whole number ratio,    so the molecular formula is also the empirical formula.
