H+ ions build up outside the thylakiod membrane because of the electron transport chain, therefore the H+ ions will want to move back through the membrane because they will move from a high concentration to a lower concentration (along the electrochemical gradient). This movement of the protons through the thylakoid membrane in response to its electrochemical gradient drives the phosphorylation of ADP to ATP as they move through ATP Synthase back into the stroma.
