I don't know why lichens are said to be possess both fungi and algae characteristics.

Please help me with this: Algae perhaps because it is photosynthetic, ?

And why fungi?

Lichens are symbiotic relationships between algae and fungi. Whenever you find a lichen, you are looking at both a fungus and an alga. Not a hybrid, but two separate organisms that live in almost perfect symbiosis.
