I am getting confused.  Alleles are alternative forms of a gene.  Therefore would the gene be the actual thing that is expressed?  and the allele would be like blue eyes...green eyes?

alleles. the gene would be eye color. so gene is a broader category than allele

You are on the right track - a gene codes for a certain characteristic lets say for example eye colour. Alleles are the alternative form eg B (coding for brown eyes) or b (for blue eyes)
The phenotype is the resulting characteristic eg blue eyes
