I heard rumour last year about two male rat gametes which successfully produced a zygote. I understand the possibility of creating a YY foetus, but that aside (not that it's unheard of, particularly among Australians!), I have searched the net, and can't find anything other than that stupid hoax site...

No.  The x chromosome carries a lot of genetic information that the y does not.  YY would be incomplete and as a result not viable.  Additionally, fertilization does make a new cell.  It makes a cell with a full compliment of genes.  All of the organelles are derived from the egg, another reason that it wouldn't work.
