People often complain about pork-barrel politics.  How can pork-barrel politics continue without the politicians involved getting voted out of office?

Politicians want to bring projects and federal government money to their districts.  They are willing to engage in logrolling, trading votes with other politicians, in order to do this.  The voters often have fiscal ignorance, where they focus on the visible benefits from projects and ignore the less-obvious costs.  In addition, with pork-barrel politics often the costs of the project are spread out among so many that the politicians don't get held accountable for agreeing to pork-barrel projects.  The voters are grateful for the projects brought to their district and are willing to re-elect the candidate who brings projects to the district even if it means government spending in general is much higher.
