Law of Conservation of Mass is that matter is neither created nor destroyed in any normal (except nuclear) chemical or physical change.
So if you have a chemical reaction, it's important to ensure that you show that all the original species (elements, polyatomic ions, etc.) still exist.

If we know the law, then we know that the mass of our final balanced equation must be equal to to the starting mass. If it's not accurate, we know we did the math wrong.
