Factor each number into its prime factorization.

12 = 2 x 2 x 3
32 = 2 x 2 x 2 x 2 x 2

So, the greatest common factor is 2 x 2 = 4

list the factors of each and then select those that are common to both

32 = 2*2*2*2*2
12 = 2*2*3

So 2*2

Use the prime factors.

12 = 2 * 2 * 3

32 = 2 * 2 * 2 * 2 * 2

So they have 2 of the 2s in common, and 2 * 2 = 4
