In 2004, 45% of the corn, 85% of the soybeans, and 76% of the cotton grown in the United States was from genetically modified (GM) seeds. According to The New York Times, most Americans have probably eaten some food derived from GM corn or soy. However, there has been strong opposition to GM foods, especially in Europe. Why? Briefly discuss whether the concerns over GM foods are justified.

There are many reasons people object to genetically modified foods. Not all people who object to some aspects object to all aspects. Among the many reasons people object:

-There is a lack of safety research available to review.
-Most of the modification is done by viruses and bacteria. This causes people to fear the genetically modified food. Given the lack of access to safety research, this leads to a cycle based on fear of the unknown.
-It is not uncommon to introduce antibiotic resistant genes.
-Lack of voluntary labelling is a concern for many. If genetically modified foods are safe, people reason, why not be more honest about them?
-These foods may have unpredictable side efffects including allergenic or toxic properties.
-Lack of consumer choice. This could also be seen as lack of compulsary labelling.
-Aggressive legal actions based on ownership rights of genetic material. The owner of the genetically modified material has rights to all plants that end up with the material. That means that open pollination near another farmer with genetically modified foods can destroy the livelihood of a farmer growing a different crop.

Concerns are valid. Not just these concerns, but all concerns. They need not be subject to anyone's approval for justification. Report Abuse
